First Night in Boston

This of course was not our first night in Boston.  Rather this was the Boston New Year's event called First Night. We bought buttons for $10 each and then got to choose from a large variety of events in the Boston area all day long.

First we went to a theater and saw a children's musical called "The Light Princess."  A King and Queen's only child is a girl born without gravity because she was cursed by a witch, so she floats around and can't touch the ground.  She must find her gravity before her 16th birthday or the witch takes over the kingdom.  The show was so funny and entertaining (naturally a love story.)  The music was catchy and charming.  At the end of the day, we all voted that the play that began our day was easily our favorite!

I took one quick picture in the theater before the crew told me not to.
Daphne's blurry, but you can see some of the scenery and stage behind her.

Daphne wanted a picture with one of the 'leaf men.' This group moved props
around the stage and carried the princess around because she couldn't touch the ground.

Derrick with the two Wise Men.  They were the narrators and
they helped care for the princess, trying to solve her predicament.

Then we headed into downtown Boston to a convention center for the next 5 hours of our day.  The convention center hosted family performances and activities for First Night.   We saw two great magic shows, dance performances, a pair of wonderful trampoline performers, a bmx bike stunt show, and a puppet show.

Mommy and Daphne got painted faces!
Daphne did a butterfly and a shooting star

Then we headed outside for a fun parade, but it was so cold that we only watched about 10 minutes of it.  It was a good 10 minutes though because the kids got glow necklaces and we saw two floats that shot paper confetti to simulate snow.

The sculpture was a huge bulldog named Buffy

We made it outside just in time to see the fireworks from Boston Commons.  The family fireworks were at 7pm, so we cheered and celebrated 'midnight' then and made it home at a wonderfully early time.

At the end of the day, Daphne's bedtime prayer included gratitude for their new light-up toys, and for riding the train to and from the city.  Dayton was sad at bedtime and he told me it was because of a man he saw today holding a sign that said "My son and I are homeless."  I explained to him a little about homeless situations, and told him how lucky we are to have a home and so many blessings.  So in his bedtime prayer he prayed for the man and his son to find a home soon.  It brought tears to my eyes that he remembered and cared for two of God's children that he doesn't know.
